Wastewater treatment

Wastewater treatment with biofilm processes

Wastewater treatment with the help of biofilm processes has developed steadily in recent years and is increasingly being preferred to the conventional activated sludge process.

The advantages of biofilm processes are less space required, a smaller amount of activated sludge to be separated and the increased process stability due to the formation of an immobilized and specialized bacterial culture.

HEL-X biocarrier are ideally suited for use as a carrier medium in this process. The special HEL-X structure offers a maximum growth area for colonization with biofilms at a low weight. The HEL-X structure guarantees high mechanical stability and resilience under the special conditions of use in biofilm processes.

In addition to the HEL-X biocarrier, there is the HEL-X Flake 30, which has a much higher protected surface due to its high porosity and is therefore particularly suitable for numerous applications with a compact design or for use in industrial applications with high conversion rates.

There are numerous variants of biofilm processes:

  • Floating bed or fluidized bed process (MBBR = Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor)
  • Fixed bed processes such as Trickling filter = or immersion filter (RBC = Rotating Biological Contactor)
  • Fixed bed activated sludge process (IFAS = Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge Process) with integrated sludge recirculation.

The special properties and the large product range of the HEL-X biocarrier and the HEL-X Flakes 30 allow a tailor-made selection of fillers for every application and every application.

Anaerobic wastewater treatment

HEL-X biocarrier are also used in anaerobic wastewater treatment.
Anaerobic processes are mainly used in industrial wastewater treatment for highly polluted wastewater.

  • Food industry
  • dairies
  • Meat processing industry
  • Chemical and pharmaceutical industry

Organic substances are converted into CO2 and methane. The resulting biogas is used in a block-type thermal power station to generate electrical energy and heat.

Compared to aerobic degradation, anaerobic degradation requires significantly less energy and less space. At the same time, however, the growth rate of anaerobic bacteria is lower, so that it is very important to immobilize the biomass in the reactor. The large, protected surface of the HEL-X biocarrier is also suitable for anaerobic processes a decisive product advantage over alternative products.
